Ulmer Receives 2023 Diversity Leader Award from Profiles in Diversity Journal

March 31, 2023 – Ulmer & Berne LLP is proud to announce that the firm and its Chief Diversity Officer, Alvin E. Mathews, Jr., have been awarded Profiles in Diversity Journal’s Diversity Leader Award, which recognizes those who work every day to expand and improve diversity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace and beyond.

“The organizations and individual leaders whose efforts are featured in the Journal’s upcoming issue represent the best of the best when it comes to putting diversity, inclusion, and equity at the center of every decision they make regarding recruitment, hiring, mentoring, recognition, support, and promotion,” said James R. Rector, Publisher of Profiles in Diversity Journal. “These organizations and their individual diversity leaders have created, and continue to support and champion, an intentionally open and inclusive culture.”

Mathews was appointed as Ulmer’s Chief Diversity Officer in January 2023, succeeding Timothy J. Downing, who retired from Ulmer in December 2022. His appointment was announced alongside two other appointments of new leaders to the firm’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging initiatives, which included Yvette R. Simpson to the newly created role of Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, and Daniela Paez as the new leader of Ulmer WILL (Women in Law and Leadership).

As Chief Diversity Officer, Mathews is charged with leading the firm’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Committee. Alongside Simpson, Mathews works to organize and implement Ulmer’s internal and external DEIB programming and community involvement efforts. A committed champion of diversity, Mathews has served on Ulmer’s DEIB Committee since joining the firm in 2019. In 2021, Mathews was honored by Profiles in Diversity Journals as a Black Leader Worth Watching.
