Ulmer & Berne LLP is proud to announce that Partner Joseph P. Thomas will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for 2018 from the Chase Alumni Association of the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University.
“Joe has an incredible ability to defend our clients in matters that are complex both legally and scientifically,” said Scott P. Kadish, managing partner. “His doctorate in pharmacy, combined with his exceptional legal skills, makes him uniquely qualified to handle the challenges of high-stakes pharmaceutical litigation. His contributions to our firm are countless, and we are proud that his alma mater is recognizing his notable achievements.”
Thomas serves as co-chair of the Litigation Department, chair of the Life Sciences Practice Group, and chair of the Pharmaceutical, Medical Devices & Mass Tort Litigation Practice Group. He is one of the nation’s leading defense advocates in class action, multidistrict, and mass tort litigation involving drugs and medical devices. He has served as national defense counsel in numerous high-impact mass tort cases, and his pioneering work has transformed the landscape of litigation against the pharmaceutical industry. Of particular note, Thomas conceived the legal argument for holding makers of generic pharmaceuticals immune from failure-to-warn suits on a federal preemption theory, which was recognized by the U.S. Supreme Court in his case PLIVA Inc. v. Mensing.
Thomas’ unique background as a scientist, licensed pharmacist, member of the patent bar, author of peer-reviewed scientific literature, and clinical researcher gives him a deep understanding of the science behind his clients’ work. His distinctive experience has won him consistent recognition from his clients and peers. Among his many honors, Thomas has been named as Best Lawyers® “Lawyer of the Year” in Cincinnati for Product Liability Litigation – Defendants, named to the Best Lawyers in America® every year since 2007, named as a “State Litigation Star” by Benchmark Litigation for the last five years in a row, and included in the Ohio Super Lawyers list every year since 2004.
Thomas will be given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Chase Alumni Luncheon held on October 5, 2018, at the Marriott at RiverCenter in Covington, Kentucky. The event will honor Thomas, as well as three other award winners, for their distinguished service and professional achievements.
