Ulmer & Berne LLP is proud to announce the addition of Counsel Alvin E. Mathews, Jr., to its Columbus office. Recognized as a lawyer’s lawyer, Mathews represents major law firms, in-house counsel, and solo practitioners on a variety of ethics and professional liability matters.
“We are excited to welcome Alvin to Ulmer where his blend of ethics, professional liability, and litigation experience will be an asset to our clients,” said Alexander M. Andrews, Columbus Partner-in-Charge. “Alvin is a highly experienced attorney who is known for being a trusted advisor to other lawyers, and we are thrilled to have him join us in providing our clients with superior legal services.”
As a former Assistant Disciplinary Counsel in the Office of Disciplinary Counsel for the Supreme Court of Ohio, Mathews has a deep understanding of the rules of professional conduct and has represented clients in hundreds of legal ethics advisory opinions and lawyer discipline case investigations, trials, and oral arguments. He carefully guides attorneys through the disciplinary process and offers advice to law students and graduates regarding bar applications, character and fitness interviews, and other admission matters. He also provides counsel in complex business disputes, including trade secret and legal malpractice cases.
Mathews is relied upon by other litigators to serve as an expert witness on lawyer conduct questions, including disqualification, liability and ethical responsibility, and legal fees, and often presents continuing legal education seminars on lawyers’ professional duties. In recognition of his talent and skill, Mathews has been recognized by Ohio Super Lawyers every year since 2011 and has been named to The Best Lawyers in America© for Administrative & Regulatory Law. He received his undergraduate degree from Miami University and his law degree from Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law.
