October 14, 2021 – Ulmer & Berne LLP is pleased to share that Chief Diversity Officer Timothy J. Downing has been appointed to the Board of Directors of Summer on the Cuyahoga (SOTC), a nonprofit organization that recruits talented college students for summer internships and immersion into the Cleveland and Northeast Ohio community with the goal that they will launch their careers in the area after graduation.
Open to students at partner schools including Allegheny College, Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), Colgate University, Cornell University, Denison University, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Smith College, and University of Chicago, the program brings together up to 70 students each year for an intensive summer program that helps them explore the professional, civic, and social offerings of the Greater Cleveland area.
Downing, who attended partner schools Allegheny College and CWRU for undergraduate and law school respectively, is a nationally recognized litigator who focuses his practice on complex business and employment and labor litigation. In his role as Ulmer’s Chief Diversity Officer, he supports the firm’s award-winning diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives while working to increase its internal and external diversity programming and community involvement.
Outside of his legal practice, Downing serves on the Board of Directors of the Cleveland International Film Festival and as a Trustee of the Allegheny College Alumni Council. He is actively involved with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), and has served in several leadership positions with the organization throughout his career, most recently as Co-Chair of HRC’s Emeritus Council. He also previously served as a Commissioner on the Cuyahoga County Commission on Human Rights. In recognition of his legal accomplishments, Downing has been consistently named to The Best Lawyers in America© for Litigation – Labor and Employment and to the Ohio Super Lawyers list, among other honors.
