David D. Black Named National Law Journal Finance, Banking & Capital Markets Trailblazer

David D. Black, Co-Chair of Ulmer & Berne LLP’s Banking & Commercial Finance Practice Group, has been recognized by The National Law Journal in its inaugural list of Finance, Banking & Capital Markets Trailblazers. This list identifies movers and shakers in these areas of law who have made an impact through new and innovative legal strategies.

“I am honored to be recognized by The National Law Journal for my work in the commercial finance industry,” said Black. “It is truly a privilege to be able to help clients achieve their business goals and in doing so support the continued economic development of Northeast Ohio.”

As a Partner in the firm’s Cleveland office, Black uses his banking and financial services experience to deliver creative legal solutions to an array of financial services industry participants and consumers of financial services, assisting with bond offerings, commercial loans for acquisitions, and debt restructuring, among others. Focusing his practice on closely held businesses with an emphasis on governance, transactions, and finance, he also serves as general outside counsel for several businesses in Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Of particular note, Black helped found and represents Cleveland International Fund, Ltd. (CiF), an EB-5 foreign direct investment Regional Center that provides qualified individuals and their families with a straightforward path to permanent U.S. residency through investment in economic development ventures. In addition to assisting CiF in a range of private equity, securities, and offerings, Black has strategically worked with CiF to place more than $240 million of foreign direct investment into construction projects in the greater Cleveland area.

Black was also instrumental in a major transaction last year between MobilityWorks, a leading provider of wheelchair accessible vehicles based in Richfield, Ohio, and Flexpoint Ford, a Chicago-based private equity firm that focuses on the health care and financial services industries. Ulmer acted as co-counsel to MobilityWorks in this important transaction where Flexpoint made a substantial equity investment in MobilityWorks, and Black helped lead Ulmer’s team in supporting this new partnership.

Ulmer’s Banking & Commercial Finance Practice Group has deep experience providing comprehensive legal services in the ever-evolving financial services sector. Ulmer’s attorneys have extensive knowledge and experience in connection with all types and sizes of financings and proactively deliver bottom-line results to a wide variety of clients, including national and local banks, finance and insurance companies, and other financial institutions.
