Ulmer attorneys Christine E. Watchorn and Trevor J. Hardy are volunteers with the Name & Gender Change Legal Clinics sponsored by EquitasHealth and TransOhio. These clinics, which are offered across Ohio, provide free legal assistance to transgender individuals who wish to change their names and gender markers on their legal identification.
During the clinics, volunteer attorneys provide one-on-one counseling to transgender individuals about the gender and name change process. The attorneys meet with individuals to complete paperwork that will change their legal names and gender markers and to provide counsel that will prepare them for what they can expect during a hearing before a judge.
“Many individuals who participate in this program have never been to court before and rely on attorneys to reassure them that a name change is a common practice and that they have nothing to be nervous about,” said Hardy.
After the court issues an order granting the request, the individuals are able to obtain new state-issued ID cards, passports, and other forms of identification that show their updated names and gender markers. For more information about the Name & Gender Change Legal Clinics, click here.
