Community Service

Ulmer & Berne is proud of the commitment that our firm and its attorneys make to local, national and worldwide communities through nonprofit involvement, pro bono work, and various other activities. Our attorneys give their time, passion, and resources to well over 200 nonprofit organizations, including the American Heart Association, Boys & Girls Clubs, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Alzheimer's Association, Human Rights Campaign, and Center for Families and Children.

In 2007, the offices of Ulmer & Berne dedicated over 5,100 hours through pro bono work and community outreach.  The Cleveland office works closely with the Cleveland Bar Association's "Our Commitment to Our Community Campaign," while the Cincinnati and Columbus offices of Ulmer & Berne are very involved with the Volunteer Lawyers Project and the Legal Aid Society.  Constantly striving to make the cities in which we work and live more viable, Ulmer & Berne's dedication to its communities is of paramount importance to the firm.

While the firm gives back to the community in numerous ways through volunteer work and board involvement, it also financially supports and contributes to nearly 200 nonprofit organizations on an annual basis, including the following:

American Red Cross
Ulmer & Berne has proudly supported the American Red Cross for over 20 years with firm partners involved both on the local Cleveland board as well as the national board. The Red Cross is committed to saving lives and easing suffering. It serves humanity and helps individuals from all backgrounds by providing relief to victims of disaster across the United States and globally. Central Ohio Diabetes Association
Ulmer & Berne has proudly supported the Central Ohio Diabetes Association financially, as well as with board involvement, for over 10 years.  According to the Association they help Central Ohioans with diabetes detect their condition, prevent onset and complications, and learn to live well with the challenges of diabetes.  One in every 10 people in Central Ohio will develop diabetes and the Central Ohio Diabetes Association provides services to these people regardless of their ability to pay.  For more information on the Central Ohio Diabetes Association, please visit www.diabetesohio.org.

Children’s Dental Care Foundation
Ulmer & Berne  proudly supports and participates in fundraising events for the Children’s Dental Care Foundation. The Foundation was established in 1955 to assist and provide dental care to underserved children with dental needs or special medical conditions.  The Foundation is an affiliate of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and is the only privately funded program of its kind in the Cincinnati community that raises and allocates funds for dental care for underserved children. Cleveland International Film Festival
The Cleveland International Film Festival was established in 1977, and Ulmer & Berne has been a part of the festival since its inception. With a firm partner acting as a founding trustee and past president of the organization, Ulmer & Berne is pleased to stay entrenched in this important outreach event which promotes artistically and culturally significant film arts through education and exhibition to enrich the life of the community. Each year over 40,000 people attend the Cleveland International Film Festival during its 11-day period with more than 200 films from over 50 countries showcased. Columbus Museum of Art
The Columbus Museum of Art was originally founded in 1878 as the Columbus Gallery of Fine Art and is still recognized today as one of Columbus’ most valuable community treasures.  The museum is nationally recognized for its educational programs and exhibits.  Ulmer & Berne is pleased to regularly sponsor the Museum’s efforts while also having firm staff volunteer hours of time on an annual basis through the Museum’s docent program.  For more information on the Columbus Museum of Art, please visit www.columbusmuseum.org.

Lighthouse Youth Services
Established in 1969, Lighthouse Youth Services serves as a symbol of hope for abused and neglected children and for families in crisis.  Lighthouse provides residential care for more than 250 children on a daily basis through its foster homes, group homes, treatment homes, and other residential programs and facilities.  Ulmer & Berne is pleased to provide financial support to Lighthouse Youth Services.  For more information, please visit www.lys.org.

Playhouse Square Foundation
The arts are an integral part of a community’s quality of life. Thriving arts provide area residents with a healthier environment in which to live and work every day. As a supporter of the arts, Ulmer & Berne recognizes its role as a catalyst in community development, and therefore has supported Playhouse Square Foundation for more than 15 years. The Ronald McDonald House Charities
The Cleveland office of Ulmer & Berne has supported the Ronald McDonald House of Cleveland since it opened its doors on September 25, 1979. An Ulmer & Berne partner served as one of the founders of the Cleveland chapter and also as its past president. The mission of the Ronald McDonald House is to support families whose children are receiving treatment at area medical centers by providing a home-like environment and essential resources and services.  The Cleveland branch regularly welcomes more than 1,100 families each year and has serviced more than 26,000 families since its establishment in 1979. Community Events

8th Annual Race for the Place
June 1, 2008


Sunday, June 1, 2008 marks the National Cancer Survivors Day Celebration and the 8th Annual Race for the Place 5K or one mile event to benefit The Gathering Place.  The Gathering Place is a non-profit, community-based cancer support center, serving the needs of individuals with cancer and their support network.

All proceeds from the Race for the Place help to keep programs and services of The Gathering Place free of charge for individuals and families touched by cancer.
