Overview

Welcome to one of the fastest growing law firms in the Midwest. For almost 100 years, Ulmer & Berne has been a full-service law firm providing the highest quality legal services to individuals and small, medium and large businesses, including Fortune 100. Since being founded in 1908 by brothers-in-law Yank Ulmer and Joseph Berne, the firm has grown to approximately 180 attorneys in four cities, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Chicago.

Ulmer & Berne regularly hires experienced attorneys as associates, partners and “of counsel” in its corporate and litigation departments. In lateral candidates, we look for the combination of academic achievement, technical skills, people skills and commitment to client service that has become the hallmark of our attorneys for nearly 100 years.

Experience and prior positions held typically determine whether lateral attorneys join Ulmer & Berne as associates, partners or of counsel.  Compensation for lateral attorneys reflects the various attributes of their practice that they bring to the firm.

New lateral hires come to Ulmer & Berne in a variety of ways: contact with the managing partner or Employment Committee head, working relationships and friendships with our attorneys and occasional introductions by a select group of search firms.

Professional Development

Ulmer & Berne’s dedication to professional development may be promised in our policy, “Commitment to Education and Professional Development,” but it is proven by the continual presence of multi-faceted services that provide legal and professional training for our attorneys.  The firm’s impressive array of programs include summer associate and first-year mentoring, long-term orientations, substantive legal in-house training programs, monthly practice group meetings, skills training programs, seminar and conference registrations and daily contact with our distinguished team of attorneys.

In order to assess the professional success and development of our attorneys, we employ an extensive evaluation process. The firm considers the roles of mentor and student equally important in developing valuable professionals, and therefore utilizes evaluations both of associates by partners and partners of associates to appraise our professional development success. These unique "reverse" evaluations allow us to gauge the efficacy of partners as trainers, mentors and role models; associates provide the necessary anonymous feedback to partners and other senior level attorneys, thereby instructing the senior level attorneys how to create an effective culture of learning.
